Director of Neuro-Rehab @ Home

Sally Chaffey - Clinical Specialist Neuro-Physiotherapist

I became fascinated in neuro-rehabilitation following my own mother’s stroke at just 46 years old. The journey that followed inspired me to want to help others to optimise recovery and enable me to empathise with clients and their families.

I completed my Physiotherapy Masters in 2006 and feel fortunate to have worked for 15 years at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. As one of the biggest teaching hospitals in Europe, I received excellent training and was empowered to develop my knowledge and skills to an excellent standard.

Seeking new challenges and opportunities I progressed into the private sector working in a complex brain injury unit in Leicester. This is what brought me to north Leicestershire in 2020 as I became the Clinical Specialist on the unit. Promotion to Deputy Hospital director gave me huge insight into the management of the wider therapy team and a greater understanding of the CQC standards.

Alas, I missed patient contact! I didn’t want to lose the clinical skills id spent years developing, sitting behind a desk. Starting Brain Injury & Stroke Rehab allows me to draw on all of the above skills and knowledge, delivering rehabilitation in line with my own high standards.

Meet the Team

Abigail Fraser

I graduated with a BSc Physiotherapy (hons), first class, from Coventry University in 2017. I am passionate about neurological physiotherapy, and I quickly realised this was an area I wanted to specialise in.

I have gained experience across a breadth of specialties working in the NHS inpatient & community settings, abroad in Canada and the private Sector. I spent 2 years working with Sally at a complex brain injury unit, which allowed me to develop advanced skills and knowledge for my clinical practice.

Alongside my clinical work with Neuro-Rehab @ home, I am responsible for teaching the next generation of physiotherapists as an associate course director for the physiotherapy apprenticeship programme at Coventry University.

Chris Derrick

I initially trained as a sports therapist with a strong interest in neurological conditions, which led me to work on an acquired brain injury unit. Under the guidance of Sally, I discovered a real passion for neurorehabilitation. I went on to complete a master’s apprenticeship in physiotherapy and leadership, qualifying as a physiotherapist in 2024.

Through my apprenticeship, I built up valuable experience working with people with complex brain injuries in both inpatient and community settings. This is where I developed the skills and confidence I now bring to my role, and I continue to work in this specialist area today.

I’m passionate about helping individuals regain independence and improve their quality of life, creating tailored, goal-driven rehabilitation plans that reflect each person’s unique journey.
